Cyanobacterial Toxins Impact Crops
نویسنده
چکیده
Oregon surface waters are experiencing increased occurrence of potentially toxic cyanobacterial blooms (Fig. 1). It is necessary to use the modifier “potentially” because there is no toxin monitoring in the state of Oregon. Advisories are currently based on cell counts of potentially harmful cyanobacteria. This summary is intended to briefly review the recent research on the effects of a cyanobacterial (a.k.a. Bluegreen algae) toxin, microcystin-LR on crop plants and highlight two human exposure routes important to Oregon consumers and growers. The toxin microcysyin-LR is one of many toxins (there are 70 analogs of microcystin alone) produced by cyanobacteria. Much of the research focuses on this compound because it is widespread, produced by many species of cyanobacteria and is hydrophobic. This may allow microcystin-LR to diffuse across cell membranes but the exact mechanism of uptake is not known. An extensive literature review [1] indicates that plants are generally not killed by realistic levels of cyanotoxins but, rather are growth inhibited, which lowers crop yields and unfortunately requires that we consider the possibility of human exposure via the consumption exposed plants.

The Languages Spoken in the Water Body (or the Biological Role of Cyanobacterial Toxins)
Although intensification of toxic cyanobacterial blooms over the last decade is a matter of growing concern due to bloom impact on water quality, the biological role of most of the toxins produced is not known. In this critical review we focus primarily on the biological role of two toxins, microcystins and cylindrospermopsin, in inter- and intra-species communication and in nutrient acquisitio...
متن کاملAnalysis of Microcystins in Cyanobacterial Blooms from Freshwater Bodies in England
Cyanobacterial blooms in freshwater bodies in England are currently monitored reactively, with samples containing more than 20,000 cells/mL of potentially toxin-producing species by light microscopy resulting in action by the water body owner. Whilst significantly reducing the risk of microcystin exposure, there is little data describing the levels of these toxins present in cyanobacterial bloo...
متن کاملDiversity and Impact of Prokaryotic Toxins on Aquatic Environments: A Review
Microorganisms are ubiquitous in all habitats and are recognized by their metabolic versatility and ability to produce many bioactive compounds, including toxins. Some of the most common toxins present in water are produced by several cyanobacterial species. As a result, their blooms create major threats to animal and human health, tourism, recreation and aquaculture. Quite a few cyanobacterial...
متن کاملVariable Cyanobacterial Toxin and Metabolite Profiles across Six Eutrophic Lakes of Differing Physiochemical Characteristics
Future sustainability of freshwater resources is seriously threatened due to the presence of harmful cyanobacterial blooms, and yet, the number, extent, and distribution of most cyanobacterial toxins-including "emerging" toxins and other bioactive compounds-are poorly understood. We measured 15 cyanobacterial compounds-including four microcystins (MC), saxitoxin (SXT), c...
متن کاملToxins produced in cyanobacterial water blooms – toxicity and risks
Cyanobacterial blooms in freshwaters represent a major ecological and human health problem worldwide. This paper briefly summarizes information on major cyanobacterial toxins (hepatotoxins, neurotoxins etc.) with special attention to microcystins-cyclic heptapeptides with high acute and chronic toxicities. Besides discussion of human health risks, microcystin ecotoxicology and consequent ecolog...
